Al Neumann was born and raised in Crawford County and is a graduate of Denison High School.

After graduation, he began his working career with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1959. He joined the US Army in 1961 and spent four years stationed in Germany.  Upon returning home from the Army, he went back to work for Northwestern Bell as a Central Office Supervisor in Adel, until his retirement in 1992.

Al became very involved in youth Athletics in Adel where he met fellow IATO Hall of Famer, Hugh Norman.  Al soon joined Norman’s crew of Drake Relays multi event officials.

Al worked many conference meets for the Big 12, Missouri Valley, Iowa Conference, GPAC and Heart of America, along with D1 regional meets and D1 and D3 national championship meets.

In 2012, Al retired from the Drake Relays and the state track meet after 35 years of service.   He has also recently retired from being the coordinator of Track and Field officials for Iowa State.

Al’s service and dedication to track and field has not gone unnoticed.  His name has been placed on the Drake Relays Wall of Honor and he is a member of the IATO Hall of Fame.
